I have been searching on this for quite some time, myself. I have been playing DAI:MP for quite some time now, here and there. I'd heard lots of different things about what was determining what kind of items you could get in chests in game as well as in the store. It was thought to have been based on your player rating, or your total gold looted, or total items looted. When there did finally come some information from bioware that there is a hidden loot score, which supposedly would max out at 10,000 items looted, I thought I had it figured out, but more recently I've seen that I no longer get as good loot as I used to. I am pretty sure I am beyond that 10,000 item threshold, so I don't know what is going on there.
As for your question, I would have to imagine that it does not depend on the items you actually have in your inventory, because I don't think you could hold 10,000 items. I have maxed out my inventory before and there have had to break down some items to be able to loot more/open more chests. But I am not certain that perhaps having more items in your inventory can possibly boost your likelihoods for better items. One thing that I do recall hearing, but I am not positive on, is that you shouldn't break down items right at the end of matches, that they at least need to go into your inventory, before they count for your loot / item score. So to be safe, don't break them down until after you are done playing some matches or in down time between matches.
Hope that helps.
