Dragon Age Origins crashes after the Harrowing

I've recently started playing Origins again and I chose the Mage origin. As soon as Mouse is defeated, I see the loading screen and then the game crashes. It's happened multiple times now. Can you please help me get past this? Let me know what other information you need from my side. I've managed to complete Inquisition multiple times on this PC so I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Thanks in advance.

Not quite. I think you might be able to with a fresh driver installation, but I can't be sure.

The important part is that it's a clean driver installation, meaning all of the files are removed from your PC entirely before you reinstall it. This is common troubleshoot step for driver related problems.

I believe the driver at the bottom of this page is the latest compatible with your graphics hardware: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/products/212683/graphics/processor-graphics/intel-uhd-graphics-family/intel-uhd-graphics-730.html

Download that, follow the clean driver installation instructions I posted before, and hopefully that will help.

It's possible that this won't fix your problem, but it's worth a try.

Update: This reply was marked as the solution, so I'll include a followup that I posted further down this thread that might be helpful to some players:

Since the crash concerns a DirectX system file, it might help to try a Windows file repair.

    Instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-system-file-checker-in-windows-365e0031-36b1-6031-...

You can follow this up with a game repair. Here are the steps to do that:

If you have the game in the EA app, right click the game in your library and look for the repair option.

If you have the game on Steam, right click the game in your Steam library, go to properties, go to local files, then click 'verify integrity of game files'.

This will cause the client to scan your files and redownload corrupt or missing files.

If you have the game installed traditionally from a disc, try instead to reinstall the game.

  • Often if a crash always happens at the same exact moment, it means there is a corrupt or missing file. You can often fix this with a repair.

If a game repair doesn't work, could you attach a dxdiag file? This might give us a clue about the nature of the crash. More info: https://help.ea.com/en/help/pc/how-to-gather-dxdiag-information/

  • Thank you for the prompt response Fred! The repair didn't help and I encountered the same crash issue again. Here's the dxdiag as requested.

    Thanks again in advance!

Your Dragon Age crashes in the DxDiag file point to dxilconv.dll. I think it's a problem with the graphics driver.

I googled the DLL along with Dragon Age, and found a few other threads on Answers HQ where the players' problem didn't end up being solved. Like yourself, those players have PCs with Intel graphics.

Technically your integrated Intel graphics (Intel(R) UHD Graphics 730) are not supported, which can lead to unpredictable problems. Still, it might help to do a clean installation of your Intel graphics drivers. Intel has instructions on how to do so on their official website: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057389/graphics.html

  • Wow so what you're saying is unless I get another graphics card, I won't be able to play DAO? It's weird that I can play DA2 and DAI though. I couldn't find the relevant driver on Intel's site either for my graphics card, even though in Device Manager it says driver was last updated this January.

Thank you very much for all your guidance!

  • Wow that worked! I installed that driver you recommended. I botched the clean driver installation and only realized later that I didn't do it right when it started uninstalling the old driver. But installing that driver and restarting my PC helped. I can play DAO again! Thank you so very much!!!

  • I spoke too soon. It hung right at the next scene. Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait until I can buy a compatible graphics card. But thanks anyway 🙂

That's unfortunate. If you ever need advice buying compatible hardware, feel free to ask.

    Hi, @SuperVegeta1987 !

I just want to update real quick with one other thing you could try. Since the crash concerns a DirectX system file, it might help to try a Windows file repair.
