Dragon Age: Origins sound choppy

I've been tinkering with the settings, and I can't get the game to run sound smoothly at all.  I get to a point in the game and the sound starts chopping and overlapping itself.

Windows 7 64-bit

8 GB RAM

Realtek audio

EVGA GeForce GT 640

Bought it on Steam 

UPDATE 5/20: Fixed it myself.  Switched compatibility mode to Vista SP1 and turned off sound effects.
