Dragon Age: Origins v1.05 crashing at same point every time. Unable to progress further in game!

This is my first playthrough of the game, so I'm not sure how to better describe the exact point I am in the game, but I have completed all the main quests except the elves, and now when I travel anywhere in the world I get a cinematic of a dragon landing and then...GAME CRASH! This is what I have tried so far:

1. Check that it's DA: O.exe responsible for appcrash (it is)

2. Tried running DA: O on only one processor

3. Turned down all settings to minimum

Here's my system specs:

OS: Win7, 64-bit

RAM: 9GB

Processor: Intel i7 930, 2.80x2.80 GHz

Video: AMD Radeon 5900

Sound: Creative SB X-Fi

Any suggestions? I seem to be at an onavoidable point in the storyline that is crashing my system, and I don't want to be stuck with these dwarves in Orzimmar forever!

    You have encountered the exact reason I got rid of IA shortly after I had installed it.  While it makes many interesting changes, it touches so many parts of the game so deeply that it really isn't compatible with anything else, not even with some of the later changes that BioWare themselves introduced! 😕mileyfrustrated:

    (I got rid of it completely after the first time I couldn't load an earlier save that had been created when it was installed, but then "unchecked" because of conflicts with another mod I liked.)

    (You might consider marking this issue as [SOLVED]. 😇 )

  • Trying the following, in order:

    Workaround 1

    Hit [ Esc ] as soon as the cutscene starts.

    If this works it'll skip the scene, so you may miss some minor story-related info.  Nothing vital.

    If it doesn't work;

    Workaround 2

    Set graphics detail to lowest possible (all options)

    Load save from right before CtD.

    If able to get past crash point, make new save.

    Restore graphics settings to "normal".

    Profit!

    If still crashing, with graphics still at minimums;

    Workaround 3

    Set game to run in "Windowed" mode, instead of full-screen.

    Load save from right before crash.

    If able to get past crash point, make new save.

    Re-set game to "normal".

    Profit!

    If not, I got nuthin' else!   😕mileyfrustrated:

  • Unfortunately, the game crashes right as the cutscene ends (including when I skip it with escape), before it gets a chance to load. I tried it on windowed mode and it had the same problem.

  • Good call. I have Improved Atmosphere and New Materials installed, and after disabling one at a time it seems that IA is causing the crash. Unfortunately, loading that save without that mod results in half my party being naked, and every dwarf NPC as well. Argh....

    I had the same exact issue but with more mods. I didn't have IA installed but I had other mods for textures, items etc. I removed mods and put them back one at a time to see which one was causing the issue. The problem disappeared after removing additional items from the game, which resulted in 2 of my characters losing their clothing/armour. I didn't want to lose those items so I found the workaround. If you have the same issue as (game crashes after/during your nightmare with the dragon and darkspawn) then all you have to do is to unequip modded weapons and armours prior to exiting Lothering. Then when you wake up from the dream and speak to Alistair you can put the armour back on your companions (and/or yourself).
