Dragon Age Origins will not start. Plenty of attempted solutions - none worked.

Hello everyone, I am having some trouble with Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition on Origin. Namely, the game just won't launch. Below you will find my PC specs, a more detailed account of the issue and the steps I have alread went through. These steps were suggested to me by the official assistance which, however, has turned into a broken record, and it keeps telling me to go over the same 4 or 5 steps.

  • Game: "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition digital download from the store on Origin.

PC SPECS:

  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.90 GHz
  • RAM: 8,00 GB
  • Video Card: AMD Radeon R7 M340 / Intel HD Graphics 620
  • OS: Windows 10 Home 64 bit (21H1 version)
  • DirectX 12

ISSUE DETAILS

When I click "play" on the game on Origin, the Origin window reduces to the bottom tab, then after a few seconds comes back on. No sign of the game having started. Task manager effectively tells me the game does not even attempt to start, as I never see the process appear.

The problem has been there since I bought the game a couple of weeks ago. The Steam version (I had bought that too) gave a very similar issue, only showing the launcher before actually shutting off.

The game is as good as new, hasn't been touched except for the steps I have already tried. These are:

  • Reinstalled Origin and cleared the cache.
  • Repaired/ updated the game.
  • Opened Origin by "run as administrator".
  • Tried to log in on Origin after resetting the password.
  • Tried via EA Desktop, also run as administrator.
  • Made sure EA Desktop or Origin and the game are allowed through my firewall and antivirus.
  • Manually uninstalled the Origin client from my computer and reinstalled the latest version of it.
  • Closed Background Tasks.
  • Ran C cleaner.
  • Had a clean boot.
  • Installed a non-updated Origin client and turned off auto update.

As none of these steps worked and as the assistance began to repeat itself and ognore my emails, I turned to these boards. I know this is a widespread issue, but I have only encountered people who had solved it somehow online. Those methods did not work for me though. Any ideas?

Thank you.

  • Try not running the game through Origin, and just starting it from the game executable (or launcher, if that is still a thing). (DAO does not require Origin be running at all. You can log in to the server via the startscreen, to verify ownership of DLC  packages.)

If you are intent on running Origin alonside the game, try turning off the Origin overlay.

I'd also try using a compatibility mode for the game... I use Windows XP SP3 mode, though you might also try Window 7 or Windows 8 mode.

  • @theskymoves Hey, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, these steps did not work. Compatibility mode did nothing, and starting the game from the .exe opened Origin instead (or actually failed to do so, it asked me to update the client, which it is).
  • I am also having this issue. I tried getting help from EA, for them to tell me things I have already tried. I don't know what to do, as the game did work until it didn't. I had this issue with my old pc, and is now doing the same on my new pc. Hopefully, there's a way to fix this, as it's one of my favourite games. All of my other games run fine, it's just Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition that's having this issue.
