Hey dudes, so I figured it out.
Apparently our macbooks don't like the resolution that DA:O tries to start with.
So go to DragonAge.ini which can be found at ~/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Settings/
Open it with text edit, and you will need to change ResolutionWidth=1440 and ResolutionHeight=900.
I got it to work (aka I can see things as well as hear them) after that. I haven't tried playing, but the person in the thread I found said it worked for them.

I am having the same issue but the fix mentioned above doesn't seem to work for me.
I have installed DA O ultimate edition on my mac in Wine.
When I start the game, the screen displays flashing rainbow colours while I hear the sound from splash screens.
Then it goes to a black screen instead of the game.
The fix mentioned above seems to be for the retina screen macbooks, I am not using a retina screen.
Does anyone have any solution for my issue?
