Dragon Age via Steam Fails to Launch

Good evening! I purchased Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition from Steam a few weeks ago and have yet to actually be able to play the game. Every time I attempt to launch it (whether through Steam, the launcher, or directly through the game's executable), a small black box appears in the middle of my screen. The black box comes up in the task manager simply as "Untitled." The same thing happens when I attempt to get my product key from Steam in order to try downloading through Origin. I am able to start DAOriginsConfig, DAUpdater, and DAOriginsLauncher. I haven't had any issues with other games I've played in the same time period. I've been browsing Steam's DA forums without success.

My specs are:

AMD Phenom II x4/3.40 GHz/8.0 GB

ATI Radeon HD 5700/1.0 GB/12.104.0.0

Speakers HD Audio Device/6.1.7601.17514

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit/Service Pack 1 Build 7601

DirectX 11

So far, I've tried:

-verifying game files through Steam

-uninstalling and re-downloading the entire game

-making sure drivers were up to date

-fiddling with the graphics settings through the Configuration Utility

-running the program as administrator

-running in various compatibility modes

-uninstalling and reinstalling PhysX (both the newest version and from the redistributable)

-adding a firewall exception/temporarily disabling the whole thing
