You just attack the box, instead of "bashing it". Just do you basic attack on it a few times. For the people you need to help, you actually just get near them and hold down your use key.
That all said, saving them is mostly pointless.

All the NPCs you save get replaced by someone else anyway, and just show up later as filler NPCs.

Well, you do get a bit of influence for saving them. And I suppose there's the immersion angle.

Also, I'm not sure if it's just dialogue or if you actually get items, but if you help the blacksmith get inside his place, he'll gather some things and when you talk to him in Skyhold he says he was able to save some stuff. I can't remember if you actually get any items though...
