Having trouble connecting a controller to origin version.

I purchased DA:I through origin the day it was released and I have not been able to play it on my PC because the option to switch from mouse and keyboard is locked out to me even though I have a properly connected wired microsoft xbox 360 controller connected to it. I know the controller works for my PC because  I use it on steam all the time. I've done the chat with an advisor thing a couple of times and they were no help, they told me to wait for a patch but i havent found anyone else having this same issue. Please help
