How to move game from HDD to SSD

Want to switch DAI to my SSD to speed up the loading and scene change time

1) Created Origingames directory on SSD

2) copied over complete DAI game directory to SSD into Origingames directory

3) Copied over complete Origin directory to SSD, and modifed the settings on the desktop icon to reflect this

4) Started Origin (from  SSD)

5) Set Advanced Settings in Origin to install games in SSD  Origingames directory

tried to start game : "..does not appear to be installed..."

don't want to d/l the entier 25GB again - anything I missed???

Basically what you need to do is have a new location set for the game to install to (Somewhere other than where the game files are currently)

    Tell Origin to start downloading.

    Pause the download.

Move your files into that location.

    Resume the download.

It'll scan that folder, and be like "HOLY *! EVERYTHING IS HERE" and poof, jump to about 98-99% then verify the files.

    then you're done. 🙂

  • You would have to modify the registry to reflect the change of location.  No I don't know how, just that you would have to.

Other option would, depending on your HD and SSD size, mirror/copy the entire drive over to the SSD.  I did that the last time I upgraded HDs from a 500gig to a 1tb drive...ended up having to do it a couple times to get the drive letters right..lol, mirror once from C to D, then change drives again, and mirror from D back to C so root drive was back to C and it took a bit of thinking and working to get the system working...luckily I had two 1 tb drives I was going to install..

Did everything on my list first, then finally hit "Download", and yeah, 20 secs later it was done. No problem

  • If you are going to be using an SSD

Make sure that ALL page-filing is turned off for that drive.

Otherwise you'll see writes of up to 20GB to your SSD.

    Shortening it's lifespan.

  • Hi there,

There is a more complex way of doing this if you are on Windows Vista or later versions of Windows

You can move the game files and then create a junction to "trick" the computer into thinking there is a folder somewhere when it is somewhere else.

To do this you use the command "mklink [/type] [new folder] [target folder]"

    So for example:

[*]Close Origin and move "D:\Games\The Sims 4" (HDD) to "C:\Games\The Sims 4" (SSD)

    [*]Click Start, type in "CMD".

[*]Right click on CMD and click "Run As Administrator".

[*]Type into CMD "mklink /J "D:\Games\The Sims 4" "C:\Games\The Sims 4" and hit enter.

It should say: "Junction Created for D:\Games\The Sims 4 <<===>> C:\Games\The Sims 4"

Now, as far as Origin is concerned, the game is on the HDD, but it is actually on the SSD

    Hope it helps!
