the loot will turn "golden" when you can interact with it - if you are still too far away, it is a kind of silver color. Same is valid for doors or conversations with people.
If you drew your weapon by mistake and cannot loot, holster it by pressing "L" (disengage).
Also, once you see the windows with all the loot items, you can loot all items at once either by clicking the button "take all" or by pressing "F".
The scan range for the "V" button can be extended later at the war table in exchange for an Inquisition point.
How do you do this on a mac? F does not work
Probably the easiest way to find out is to check the key bindings menu inside Options menu.
