Jaws of Hakkon, Ice Giant Bug

If I use an attack that alters enemy speed, (such as Haste or Mark of the Rift), the Giant will fail to drop loot. This bug is repeatable. The work around is to not use those abilities, but still, it's odd.

  • Copied from one of my comments: "... the issue is that the Ice Slam (where it raises its fists high) is an uninterruptible animation. Killing the Ice Giant while it's attempting a slam will cause the game to glitch.

It's possible to kill the Giant very quickly so it doesn't fire any slams, but it's probably best to wait for 3 slams before attempting a finishing blow."

Interesting catch, thanks for the post. I have noticed inconsistent drops for some monsters, but I'd assumed it was pure RNG.

  • The bug is worse than than I thought. It's inconsistent whether or not the Ice Giant dies and drops loot. When its health hits 0, one of three things happens:

it dies normally and drops loot,

it stops fighting, just stands there, and doesn't grant XP or loot, or

it stands there, explodes into gore, and fails to drop loot or give XP.

For the latter 2 scenarios, it usually fires off an Ice Blast/Stomp before becoming invulnerable, and

generally, if I manage to injure its leg, it will randomly pop-up from a kneeled state to fire an ice attack.

    It's a very unstable enemy.

    EDIT:

I think the issue is that the Ice Slam (where it raises its fists high) is an uninterruptible animation. Killing the Ice Giant while it's attempting a slam will cause the game to glitch.

It's possible to kill the Giant very quickly so it doesn't fire any slams, but it's probably best to wait for 3 slams before attempting a finishing blow.

  • Just wanted to say that I just hit this bug myself tonight, likely because I used Haste and possibly also from Lightning Flask given what I'm reading here.

    Very frustrating.

Confirmed, reloaded a few times to test it out.

No speed altering used: Giant dies and drops loot and XP just fine UNLESS you kill it mid ice slam, then it may be stuck invulnerable with zero health, basically it becomes a lag monster, dead but not actually dying so, no loot, no XP. Alternately it will explode but, again no loot and no XP. It will do the former if the kill comes before it's arms begin the downward motion and, the later if it dies during the downward motion. SOLUTION would be to disable ice slam if giant is below 10% remaining health.

Haste, no matter when the kill happens, if Haste is still active, lag monster, no loot, no XP. Mark Of Rift, exploding giant with no loot or XP. Again the speed altering ability has to be active at the moment the giant falls to zero health. Not sure that can be fixed but, again it may be because the Ice Slam ability has initiated in the program and, the animation is not yet visible to the player due to the altered speed effect going on.

I'd try disabling Ice Slam on the giant if it's speed is slowed and, when it is less than 10% HP remaining, that may solve this glitch. Certainly easier than trying to readjust other possibilities so, if nothing else a good place to start.

  • 3 years later and this bug still exists. It looks like one of those things a That just wont ever be fixed.

    @TheDrkPhnx

All patching for the game stopped late 2015...Nov or Dec of that year.  So anything still showing as an issue past that date, will always be an issue.  EA/Bioware patched the game for a year, which is about all anyone does now days, unfortunately, but it is getting to be a pretty standard practice from what I can see.
