It would be silly on the Dev's part to have the quest giver / turn in leave (since not everyone does) if you close the rift first -- the NPC has no reason to believe that his lover won't still be on the way to meet him until you deliver the news.
I'm afraid to keep questing now until this is resolved -- I don't want to get farther into content only to find out I have to go back to a previous save to correct it. I dearly hope that isn't the case, since we can't name our saves anymore and I don't know how far back to go.
