Hi everyone, signed up just to post this as have been following the thread since patch 2.
For all those experiencing 95-100% CPU USAGE as soon as main menu appears, with loads of freezing and gpu drops in game- almost unplayable - I stumbled upon a solution that MAY work for some or you. It's weird and I'm honest to god not trolling so don't flame me!
After starting the game 30-40 times, messing about with cleanmem, clean boot, and pretty much anything else that has been mentioned, I gave up at ever getting to run this game properly again.
Then, yesterday, I discovered something really strange. I started playing but forgot to close down a movie running on VLC player in the background. I was waiting for the game to boot up before alt-tabbing out to close the movie when I noticed the main menu of DA was silky smooth. I alt-tabbed out and went to task manager and found that the cpu usage was now around 40-55%! I took screenshots of all the processes and services so that I'd have a chance at replicating them.
I continued to play, not understanding why I had lucked out. 4 hours later, with NO FREEZES at all, I shut down the game and went to bed.
I started the game up today and the freezes were back. I alt-tabbed out and compared the task manager info to my screenshots from the night before. Identical. Then I thought to myself 'The only thing that's different is that I haven't started up a movie'. I didn't see how it could make a difference but, being desperate, I shutdown the game, started up VLC movie player and then booted the game back up and voila! No freezes, no gpu drops and 40% cpu usage again!
Wth?! I'm not gonna pretend that I know how this happened, it's probably the weirdest fix I've encountered in almost 20 years of pc gaming. However, maybe some techie out there knows what VLC media player might be loading up that helps? Codecs, services or something?
Doesn't fix it when I use Zoomplayer. Haven't tried Windows Movie Player. I've repeated this test several times btw. Also, once I've opened VLC player and started the game, I can alt-tab out and shut it down and the game continues to run fine.
Hope this helps someone out there or gives the tech department a clue about something.
