So I managed a good couple of hours last night without any issues (including no screen flickers), and then I crashed to desktop. Deciding it was time for bed I retired; but this morning things have been flakier again, though still no screen flickers which is a relief, those were driving me mad. I have had several crashes to desktop, and now I've started to get the white screen of death. So it looks like reducing the graphics quality was a short term fix and I will now try the next thing on your list of suggestions; I think the drivers will be the next port of call as my husband gave me a new graphics card for my birthday when the game came out (bless him).
I'll let you know how I get on.

have you tried rolling back the drivers to 344.65?
doing a custom, clean install, with only the graphics driver and physx?
