How many save files do you have in your save folder?? I have seen this game have issues with too many saves in the folder, you may try removing all but the most recent or maybe you have a save getting corrupted and causing issues, thus remove a the latest and most of the older and see if it works. Otherwise let @holger1405 walk you through the very technical diagnostics as they are very very good at it.

@mcsupersport I just checked and removed all the extra saves (and tried to start the game with no saves at all) but sadly enough it didn't make a difference. Thanks though! hadn't thought of that.
