Possible fix: download visual c++ redistributable

Can't claim credit for this, saw it elsewhere, but downloading and installing this (the x64 version in my case) fixed the crashing to desktop:

I may have spoken too soon. It worked the first time I played through, but randomly crashed during cut-scene the next time I played. Only thing I did different was change some of the graphics settings, dunno if that could have been the cause.

it didnt work Damn if you find something that works lmk i only get about 10 minutes before crash to desktop per play

My problem is the 2008 redist, when I try to repair it, I get an 997 0verlapped error message!
