Post on Avast forum saying there are issues with latest update and games with anti-cheat monitor....so it may be related to your Avast antivirus.

Have you tried disabling or at least putting in an exception to DA:I to your Avast AV?

Alas. Even after completely disabling Avast, I have the same problem.

Momentary black window that goes back to the desktop the moment it tries to go fullscreen.

Before blaming Avast, I would look at your dedicated video card, its settings in the Geforce Control Panel, and the driver.  Most of the mobile "Optimus" graphics devices have numerous faults, with the most common one being a laziness about getting to work when required to do so.  The drivers have been pretty bad from nVIDIA in recent months, with regard to all games running the Frostbite game engine.

I'm a bit stumped on what else I can do to get it running when it comes to the graphics card. Using GeForce Experience I got the latest game ready driver, and using the NVIDIA Control Panel, things should be running with the NVIDIA GPU.

Booted up Skyrim and it's running fine, the  NVIDIA GPU Activity states that Skyrim is running in the NVIDIA GPU.

 I tried this today, it didn't work for me, but it might for others:

The black window situation (before it tries to fullscreen) that I experience looks just like the one in that vid. ☹️

I opened up the NVIDIA GPU Activity, while I tried opening Dragon Age Inquisition. DragonAgeInquisition.exe was listed very briefly before, as usual,  it closed. Also messed around with the Registry files like some suggested. No dice as well.

May also be worth checking your power management profiles and make sure everything there is set for highest performance.  I have seen someone have an issue with their laptop not wanting to use the better card due to trying to save power. 

Can't remember from your earlier posts here, but have you tried deleting your profile files in DAI, and letting them get remade to see if somehow a setting got messed up??  Had that happen to a few people too.

Alrighty. Looked into Power Options. In Advanced settings, I went to PCI Express and in Link State Power Management I selected OFF in both On battery and plugged in.  Set Power Options to High Performance.

No change. : (

And I'd kill to be able to dabble with the Profile files....But DA:I only generates them one you successfully start the game. My black screen situation doesn't count as "starting up", so I don't have the Save folder at all.

I'm linking into this thread because I'm having the exact same issue. Game tries to start and then just shuts. Have tried what was suggested so far and still no luck. This has been happening ever since Origin updated.

2 things...

Make sure both DAI and the Origin Client have the Run as Administrator selected.( you can also play around with compatibility trying Win7 or 8 as long as you switch both)

If that doesn't work, I am seeing a problem with a .dll file in your DiaX file....

 aswhooka.dll

you may try deleting Origin and reinstalling it, and deleting part of DAI and letting Origin repair the install, and see if it makes any difference.

I looked into aswhooka.dll and it seems to be related with Avast... Don't really now if it's affecting anything, or how to deal with it if it is.

Deleted my origin cache and some files in DA:I in the Origin Games box and hit repair. Nothing new.

This is becoming pretty heartbreaking.  ☹️

Don't know if it helps, but. I opened task manager while I try to start Dragon Age:Inquisition. It appears very briefly on the list before closing. It almost feels like something is shutting it down.

GUYS I FIXED IT! After all that jazz... It was Origin.

I had done a clean install of Origin, and only had DA:I installed. It would black screen and wouldn't open. Nothing seemed to help.

So I wonder, "Will another game work on Origin?". I find Sim City 2000. Easy, quick install. I open it and make it to the title screen. It works. I close it.

I then try to open up DA: I. It works.

I guess Origin needed to open up another game before it would open DA:I? I don't know what mechanisms are behind t but it worked. I bet this is the same thing that happened with my ME:3 all those years ago. Hopefully this will help some people.

It appears that from some reason Simcity 2000 allowed the proper permissions for Origin on your system. I am not sure why, but I am glad to hear that it fixed your problem!

I will take that information into account for any similar future issues players might have. Thanks again for taking the time to post your findings.

I had the same problem and creating an exception in AVG worked. But now, after playing for 60 hours, I can't get further than connecting to servers and hitting continue. The screen goes black with the 'dragon eye' in the corner, then the music stops and that's it...

Might try deleting ProfileOptions and ProfileOptions_options  files in your DAI saves folder.

These are the customization of the game options such as video, audio, key bindings and game plays stuff you can choose.  Deleting them will reset things back to factory default which may fix your issue IF the settings have gotten corrupted or set to something that doesn't work on your system.

Default location is (Main installed drive...Usually C🙂:\Users\(whatever your user name is)\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save

Having the same issue here as well, AVG exceptions helped one night. Come back the next and the same issue re-appeared. Deleting the profile files in the save folder had no effect either. All it does it come to a black window as it is about to launch then crashes. 

@Leon_Carbine0 Hey, perhaps the AVG exceptions were somehow wiped. If you try temporarily disabling it that should help to determine if AVG is still a factor, or if the issue lies elsewhere.

@Leon_Carbine0 Hi, turns out that for me it was a corrupted save file in the end. Issue resolved by loading the previous game save and continuing from that.

So I put avg into passive mode, restarted the computer and that seemed to work. I then reactivated avg and restarted and it was still working (even opening and closing the game a few times). Come back the next day and the same issue has re-appeared.

also tried re-deleting profile options after it stopped working and that did not help

My game just start and then closes. I dont know what to do. I reinstalled the game, origin, updated my NVIDIA controllers, updated GFocerExperience. I tried installing another game (MS3) and it opens right. Can anyone help me? If i check dxdiag it says my controllers are updated.

EDIT: It was Avast all along blocking the game. I just turn it off and the game opened.

For sure. Almost 200 hours by now. I just bought the dlc's 2 weeks ago and started a new game 😉 .

Just so you know -- having the same issue with Avast.  Went through the uninstall, reinstall, clean boot mess twice -- then read this thread's comments about AVG and turned off my Avast firewall for 10 minutes to let the game start -- even though there are exceptions made for Origin and Inquisition, the stupid protection is overprotective.

Funny enough the tech support folks didn't mention virus scanners and the like -- they went for the nuclear option.

Now I can't reload my old saves because they were, according to the game, "done on a newer version of the game" and they need me to "download a patch" to get them to work.  Grrrr.

I had a lot of trouble letting go of stuff in Inquisition. Meaning, I wanted to move on to a new map but I just couldn't help resists collecting all the things on the current map.. the struggle was real.. 😢

I hope you will enjoy the DLC's as well, let us know once you finished them!

Hey there. Thanks for this, I've been trying to figure out why my DAI kept starting and crashing the past 24 hours. I couldn't imagine that it was the new version of Avast Free Antivirus that was doing this. As it stands, I've had to resort to disabling all of the features for 10 minutes to get this to work. I don't suppose you know of any way to change these settings permanently just for this game and Origin?

Most antivirus programs have an exceptions list, that you then list which programs you don't want it to bother with, or which folders.  You then need to put Origin, and DAI(both in programs and in user, two separate locations) into this list and it SHOULD be ok, but with Avast, I have heard some say they had to disable to make it work like you do.

Exceptions list is usually in advanced options or something like that....google it if you can't figure it out.  There was a thread earlier today about AVG and how to do it on that one.
