It has been a few months since I played DAI and had to bash a wall......
But I thought you had to use a warrior class, maybe even one with shield and I don't think you actually attacked it, but more activated it(I don't think you had to use a special power, but maybe..., like I said been a few months..)......I am 90% sure on the warrior only part.
Magic barriers took a mage attacking them.....unless cutscene related.

Shield isn't necessary. The warrior will kick the door open regardless.
Like you said, it's a context sensitive ability akin to 'lockpick' and 'energize'. The only exception is that locked doors actually can be opened with certain combat abilities, as long as they aren't sturdy locks that require 'deft hands, fine tools'.
You have to use a warrior, such as Cassandra, to bash through the walls. The same way you'd need a rogue, such as Varric, to pick a lock.
All you need to do is walk up to the wall and press the action button, I play on PS4, I assume it's 'E' on PC.
