I suspect you have a stereo setup and the game is outputting in surround sound. In a surround sound signal, dialog goes through the central speaker, which a stereo setup doesn't have.

In the dialog options, check the option to force stereo sound.

If you do have surround sound, make sure it's set up properly in your system settings (whether you have a computer or game console).
