The enemy doesn't see the traps, so you place them where you think the enemy might go. For instance, you can place spike traps in front of you to slow down enemies who are coming for you. (This is more useful for archers than dagger users.)

I like the artificer specialization, which has all kinds of explosive traps. I just walk over to a group of enemies and throw it right at them.
