Soldier's Peak - Bug?

Strangely enough, nothing mentioned above helped me... but just pausing the game into the menu (as soon as possible after the pre-battle dialogue finishes) and unpausing it did.

P.S.: That is, "manually" moving Avernus surely might help, I just had nobody with appropriate moving spells/abilities in my party.

The NPC walks toward the first circle and stops short and does nothing.

I used Shale to throw a rock at the NPC and force them towards that circle and the battle then started.

Hope this helps anyone who doesn't have a mage to use.

No this is not solved, I tried every solution listed and not one of them worked. EA or BioWare whichever company bundled the game to sell it as a new product corrupted the file while making the bundle.  I had the original versions of the Game and all of the DLCs and played through several times. It was one of my favorite games and I always went back to it again and again. I can no longer do that because of this defective product. And shame on you both EA and BioWare for knowing your product is defective and taking people's money without fixing the problem. A friend who works in the computer industry told me EA Games and Origin was going downhill, I was skeptical, but unfortunately he may be right.

Using Shale to knock the NPC onto a summoning circle worked for me, by hurling rocks.

Spamming the Escape key as soon as the cutscene is over worked for me as well. Thanks!

Wow, I can't believe it but I got it working.

So the game wouldn't recognize "escape" commands while Sophia was walking towards the circle, but it would pause with "space" commands. Well, after unpausing she just stopped at her normal place. Back the drawing board right? Nope, apparently it worked for me after pausing while she was walking, saving the game, and then loading that save. She then made it to the circle.

None of the solutions worked for me.  The wierd thing is I think the battle occured the first time I entered the room before Sophia and/or Avernus.  I have the winter staff.  Avernus just stands there now.  Very frustrating.

This is going to sound strange, but what has worked for me every single time is running in the opposite direction of Avernus the minute he finishes his dialogue. It's hard to articulate, but when Avernus finishes his dialogue, run away from the portal and for whatever reason, it works. I've done this multiple times, and it hasn't failed me once.
