Ok, maybe I was thinking of a different skill.....Thousand Cuts is a focus based skill, in the Tempest tree....I was thinking a different game maybe...
Best guess is you don't have enough focus to use the skill, Focus is shown by the gold bars just above your skill hotkeys. So if you don't have a full bar or three, then you can't use the skill. In your first picture you definitely don't have enough focus, and in the second, I can't tell, but you may still not. So fill the bar up and see if it is usable, but it is basically a one shot ultimate power and not a every fight thing...which is one reason I rarely use my focus skills, or base a build on them, cause my luck is I will really really need it and it is not available..

Now that you mention it... I didn't even notice the focus bar.
- 6 years ago@mcsupersport I have no idea except for cullen for help, any other places?

@deathssavior1577 Cullen can give you the perks to get the extra focus bars. Focus itself you get from fighting, it builds up over time. If you have the trespasser DLC, make sure you don't have the trial turned on that resets focus every time you go to a camp (trials are in difficulty options if I remember correctly).

@deathssavior1577 ; Maybe you should read the Codex entry on "Focus". Then you can stop making multiple threads about the same 'problem' that's just a result of you not understanding the game. (Even though it was explained in a pop-up early on.)
- 6 years ago@ThandalNLyman how do I unlock Focus in the codex? I still can't use my special skill yet. This right now is the only problem I have. I am trying to not post too many.

https://dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Abilities_(Inquisition)
From that site, which is a pretty good info resource on the game if you wish to browse it....
"Focus
Edit
Focus abilities are represented by diamond icons as they are also active abilities. They are color coded to be yellow and deep brown. These abilities are only unlocked after the first act of the game and are able to be used when enough focus has built up. Focus is a resource gained each time someone in the party deals damage. Each party member has a personal focus meter, but all party members gain focus when a single member deals damage. The focus meter has three tiers, the first of which is unlocked automatically and the two higher tiers can be unlocked using Inquisition Perks toward Advanced and Master Focus in the Forces category."
Basically this is what we have been saying, Focus is a thing that is built and then used up when using a skill that requires it. Once you have used it, you have to build it back to be able to use the skill again. This is why the skills that require Focus are so strong, the balance is you can't use them often otherwise they would be massively overpowered.
Sorry, I don't know where in the codex it explains it, but the demo of the first focus ability should have been a walk through on focus...when you were escaping Haven just before the song.
