Windows 10 Compatibility issue and problems with updating games.

Currently when launching Origin on my windows 10 Desktop I receive an alert informing me that I am launching the application in windows compatibility mode with the requisite warning that it might not work properly. Although this is to be expected since windows 10 hasn't been out too terribly long it seems that the issue I am facing is with installation of updates to games, specifically Dragon Age Inquisition which recently released new DLC.

My game library becomes a grey page right out of the gate, lasting anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute. When I finally am able to select from my games library I begin by attempting to Launch DAI and download its requisite update. Instead of the familiar tab popping up at the bottom of the application informing me that the game is updating and giving me the familiar blue estimate and link, the screen takes me to the origin application settings tab. Without the download having been started nor assigned to the download queue I am left to return to the library with a banner at the bottom of the box art which says Update Paused. Exhausting the few methods I know in order to try and trick a update or download queue into appearing, including trying to download another game and cancelling the update and re- updating, I am left incapable of resolving my issue.

With this in mind I attempted a basic diagnostic of Origin, from reinstalling to trouble shooting the application leaving me with multiple and inconsistent issues. The foremost being that the troubleshooter ends by telling me that the program is Incompatible with windows 10. I attempted to run in compatibility mode, but again its telling me I am running in compatibility mode even when I am not. Errors I have received while installing the application have involved it informing me that a file can not be read, however it is never the same file and sometimes installed without any "issues" at all while still leaving me with the root problem.

All in all I find myself at a loss for explanation, I cant even find the program as an application installed under add or remove programs in windows 10, where as it had been perfectly visible in windows 8.1. I am unable to play the new DLC I purchased for Dragon Age Inquisition and would really like the chance to do so in the near future. This seems to be an issue with origin being unprepared for windows 10 rather than a hardware or software issue on my part but I was unable to find anything similar to this on the forums. Again, the application will launch while declaring compatibility mode to be enabled, however it will not update, fix, or install any thing

If any one has a fix or suggestions I might be able to try I would greatly appreciate it, and if not can we bring this up to some one working on Origin for EA so they might work towards a compatibility patch for the program? Please and thank you!

  • I also updated to w10 fron 8.1 with Origin and DAI installed already. But had no problems apart from DAI starting in window mode which is slightly annoying.

Anyway you shouldn't need to use compatibility mode.. it works fine for me without it.

Also I have noticed that W10 kinda forces HD power down on you so if you have origin games folder on another drive.. it might be in standby when Origin launches and so it takes some time to refresh the games list.

I would also say try installing the game on your primary drive to see if that helps..

if you can't find Origin in the add/remove programs.. did you find the OriginUninstall.exe file and use that? Location : Program Files / (x86) > Origin > OriginUninstall.exe

If you get it un-installed you can try re-installing from fresh. But you could use a program called Revo Uninstaller or CCleaner to do a clean uninstall first.

I reckon try changing the "Origin Games" location though to your primary drive may sort it. If it does you can manually copy over the files from the old location..

I am running it without compatibility mode, however it launches saying that it is running in compatibility mode, regardless of if I have the box in the program properties checked to do so. So the issue isn't as simple as not running it in compatibility mode. Because it Auto runs with it enabled.

The problem with reinstalling the game is that I literally don't have a download queued when trying to download, so it is impossible for me to download the game to another drive. And even if I were to move it I wouldn't be able to verify that the game is still on my system, just in another download location because the system will queue it and never run a verification or repair. So I can't install it on my primary drive.

The program executable is where it is supposed to be along with all the other game files, however the system does not detect Origin at all even after reinstallation. That being said I havn't done as thorough of a clean like using CCleaner or Revo Uninstaller. I didn't want to have to use Hirens just to work out an origins issue.

Lastly origin itself is installed on my primary hard drive already, the only thing that isn't on my primary hard drive is my game library. But I appreciate the suggestion. The only thing here I might be able to do is a complete reinstall ill give CCleaner a shot once I'm done with my class work and let yall know how that goes.

so, did you found out what triggers that compatiblity mode message? I've upgraded to Windows 10 as soon as i could, and since then I've had that "problem"... nothing changes on the program or games, everything runs fine. Only problem is that message showing up...

  • I've been having almost the same problem, except, I already had everything updated and installed for a while.
I had no problem for several months, then, just recently the "btw, compatibility mode" message started coming up.
Now my Inquisition game freezes while I am playing, and I don't seem to be able to actually turn the compatibility mode off.
