XBOX 360 controller locks game on PC

I played for a few minutes with mouse and keyboard.  Since the control scheme was pretty wonky (which you are well aware of) I thought I would try my XBOX 360 controller instead.  It recognized it then froze.  I restarted the game and now I'm stuck at the "Press Start" opening cut scene.  None of the buttons work.

I'm using the controller for other games (chiefly, Shadows of Mordor) so there is nothing wrong with the device itself.

I'm guessing you'll suggest a re-install.  How do I prevent the same thing from happening?

Thanks,

Mark

  • @outofdiskspace If you're still having this issue you can navigate to My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save and delete the ProfileOptions_profile folder. This will reset any custom settings including the gamepad toggle.

If you get this issue again when you restart, check your Device Manager. If you have any gaming peripherals(mostly keyboards) they can be seen as a gaming controller and given precedence over your 360 pad, thus making it non-responsive.

  • You can unplug the controller and launch the game, it will revert to Mouse and Keyboard

I will attest to David's solution. I had this exact problem and it turns out that my Razer Nostromo gaming speed pad was conflicting with my Xbox 360 controller. This only happened on Dragon Age Inquistion and on Dark Souls, no other game. So My recommendation is to unplug any other joysticks, speed pads etc and see if the game recognizes the game pad. If it does slowly reconnect the peripherals until you see which one conflicts and then unplug it before you play DAI.

BIO-AdmiralX, for me unplugging the controller did not revert the control scheme back to MKB, I had to delete the file as David described in order to be able to use MKB again. Other users have had this same experience since launch, it's a bizarre occurrence.

It IS a bizarre occurrence.  I've been using a keypad for probably 15 years (Saitec before Razor Orbweaver) and never had this conflict with a game before, especially from two different companies (Ubisoft Far Cry 4 would freeze unless I unplugged Orbweaver)  they've since fixed that problem, at least.

I can get the Xbox controller to work if I unplug my Orbweaver before starting the game.  It's not needed at that point anyway so not a big deal I guess.

Thank you for taking the time to respond ragnarok013!
