I think a lot of the gaps between the two games could be filled with tie-in materials, just like how the novels The Masked Empire and Asunder set up a lot of stuff in Inquisition. I think it's a bit curious that we didn't get any of that in the buildup to Veilguard. I figured the animated series on Netflix would serve that purpose, but as it turns out, it didn't.
While I don't think every story detail needs to be explained, I think building on the friendship between Varric and Rook could really be valuable, since we're informed about their friendship but I never really felt it.
Edit: With regards to tie-in materials, I forgot about the audio drama. However, that contained lore contradictions, so I don't know if it can be considered canon.
Yes that's a good point too! If not a playable DLC, some other type of material to fill in the gaps would be appreciated. I definitely agree the relationship between Rook and Varric needs to be expanded on. I know Varric from the prior games. But why does Rook view him so highly and see him as a mentor? It would be great to develop that relationship ourselves. Especially for new players if Veilguard is their first DA game. Why would they care about Varric from 5 minutes of conversation?
