Momentum and mana generation is too slow

Am I doing something wrong here. My first playthrough was on Storyteller so really didn't notice anything. Now I am on my second play through, and understanding combat a bit better, I have it set on...

    Think I figured out my Rogue. Went through all my skills and found HUNTERS FOCUS eats momentum, and I didn't realize it.  I was using it often and eating up what little momentum I had. So I stopped using it for awhile let my momentum bar build up full and now it's a lot more manageable. At least now I know why I couldn't keep any momentum. <Face Palm>

There's an ability for mages to manually charge mana. It's pretty fast and very useful. I think it's somewhere in the top left of the skill web. You can also later expand maximum mana with equipment, so you have a bigger pool to draw from.

It's this one. "Channeled Thoughts", right before heading into the Death Caller specialization.

As for the rogue, I personally didn't have much of an issue building up momentum. I just got a few hits in, dodged a lot, and if someone was at a distance I kept my momentum going by firing some quick shots.
