What did you think about Veilguard's ending? (Spoilers of course)

I got Veilguard at Christmas and have been taking my time with it, doing all side content I could find. Just finished the main story today and I crave to discuss it.

I got into Dragon Age in 2009. Origins and its worldbuilding blew me away – I had never played such a well written game before. Now I feel like BioWare have mostly wrapped up the story they set out to tell. I thought the reveals and especially the ending were satisfying. Did Veilguard give you the answers you wanted?

I have read that Veilguard has sold poorly. Maybe that's understandable, with 10 years since the last installment. Could be other factors as well, perhaps. Veilguard is not a flawless game but neither is Origins, 2 or Inquisition. They are all pretty different. For me, Veilguard is the most enjoyable installment in terms of combat and exploration. The world design is incredible. I also liked the companions' dynamics as a group and the voice actors did a great job. On the other hand, I think the romances could have had a little more depth. What's your take?

  • I'm not happy.

They made sure to try to keep us on the lookout for the next installment, but I think (hope) it's like Star Trek films: the installments alternate between decent & disappointing.

From a storytelling standpoint, they have a lot to make up for to make me feel good about it again.

Thank you for posting. Do you mean to say that you think Inquisition is a superior game to DA2? Personally I wouldn’t agree but as I said the games are all pretty different and each seems to have its cult following. I do wonder if there will be more installments since DAV apparently did not sell well.

  • I came in at Inquisition & it grabbed me so hard I bought Origins & II as quickly as I could. Origins is amazing, II is okayish, Inquisition is my favorite (it introduced me to Thedas, after all) & Veilguard just felt so superficial & then hurt my feelings. These are just my opinions. I have a tendency to come in late to things & then follow them until they give up the ghost.

All things considered, I'll take it. I have already broken down my feelings about this game 5,000 times, defending it against all comers. I adore it. It is my favorite of the four, just edging out DA:2.

The ending sequence of this game, from Tearstone on, crushes all of the previous games. That was absolutely outstanding. Thank you for having the courage to call out Origins for its flaws. The torches and pitchforks will be outside your door in short order. Honestly, I played the first three in reverse, so I could only stand one run of Origins. I just wanted to know the meaning behind my options in Dragon Age Keep.

With the romances, it really depends who you went for. If you're the "needier type", Taash or Harding. If you want a traditional experience, Emmrich, Davrin, Neve. If you want to feel like you're irrelevant, Bellara or Lucanis. lol I am aware you don't get the Inquisition relationship routine: Flirt your tail off, profess your interest or love, prove it with a gift, deal with a potential deal breaker, overcome it, making your relationship stronger, smooch a bunch until the end of the game, then do a thing in The Tresspasser. lol DA:2 had the best relationships, especially with their "nemesis system", no LOTR. I was full aggro with Merrill and she was still "frequenting my mansion". lol

I love DA Origins – it's one of my top 5 video games of all time. But I think all the sequels have been worthy in their own way and I was satisfied with how Veilguard turned out. I agree, the whole finale from Tearstone on was some of the most suspenseful and engaging the series has ever been. Having been in this fight, as it were, for 15 years, I also felt invested in this world by now. I enjoy other RPG series like the Elder Scrolls, Fallout etc but few worlds have gripped me like Thedas.

Heh, I did fall for Bellara and I did feel like it never really got going, especially compared to all the intimacy scenes in previous games. But there was a happily ever after of sorts where I was happy to leave the characters, and what you're saying makes me want to replay the game at some point and make different choices.

I may want to do that anyway because I chose Davrin and Assan to lead the charge at Tearstone. I couldn't believe it for the whole story finale until the credits rolled and I still haven't recovered. But the alternative would have destroyed me as well.
