"Spirit Blade" Trait bugged/doesn't activate

Despite having put a skill point into Spirit Blade (a Trait in the Antivan Crow section of the Mage skill tree), it has never activated. Instead, Rook just does the normal Heavy Attack. (This is after a Light Attack Chain, against an enemy with an Arcane Bomb debuff ready to be triggered.)

Possibly related: I remapped Heavy Attack from Shift+LMB to MB5.

Edit: Thanks to someone in a Steam thread about the same issue, I realized that it doesn't require an Arcane Bomb to trigger, so I started testing by just attacking nothing. Conclusions:

  • I can sometimes get Spirit Blade to trigger when using very specific, precise timing to make the game realize I'm going for a combo.
  • Sometimes, even with specific, precise timing, it doesn't trigger.
  • Sometimes, even with a deliberate weird pause in the middle of the combo, it does trigger.

Even if this Trait actually worked 100% consistently, it would still be pretty useless, since it requires a long chain to set it up, at a time in the game when a lot of Rooks using it probably have the Arcane Strike Ability Upgrade that makes Strike abilities apply Arcane Bomb. The fact that the trigger seems to be half-busted just makes it even worse.

Spirit Blade should just entirely convert your heavy attack to the ranged version.

Edit 2: It appears that if you chain four light attacks before the heavy, Spirit Blade triggers much more consistently. So that's at least a temporary solution, though it still doesn't solve the problem of a poorly designed Trait.

  • So far, I'm having good results with chaining four light attacks instead of three before the heavy. It seems like Spirit Blade is triggering 100% of the time when I do that. So for now I'm marking this as a "solution," even though it's still bugged, since there's a workaround.

Similar but different, spirit blade was working for me consistently, then I went to dock town to do a quest and suddenly it no longer triggers at the end of the sequence like it should. Refunding point and restarts do not solve the issue

Still having issues with Spirit Blade not firing. The "solution" suggested here does help it fire more consistently, but it is far from being a good work around. I did a bit of testing myself and found that even after 4 light attacks, the spirit blade often doesn't fire if there was any delay in the attack chain. This seemed especially true between the last light attack and the heavy attack.

This is a serious problem for a class and specialization that needs to be on the move constantly in combat to survive, particularly in higher difficulties. As the OP suggested, the trait should just convert your heavy attack to Spirit Blade. If that somehow seems too overpowered, make the trait always trigger Spirit Blade from Heavy Attack if the target has an Arcane Bomb.
