I figured it out. The game was taking FOREVER to load a short scene before you walk through the doors. Just wait before going into where you get trapped and a little speech will play out and the rest will perform normally.
Confirmed - walk very slow you can miss the cutscene - if you fight before the cutscene you get stuck
