@PalermaAU I just wanted to write about the same thing! Again!
Yeah you can set it to manual just like HeDinDoNuffins said, but it doesn't matter. Every time you start this trash of an app and after done playing the background service is left running after closing the EA App alltogether.
This is why I wrote to EA support not long ago and they gave me a link to an old Origin installer. That worked fine until today when I was forced to install this trash again... Now I won't be using EA App ever again. This is the third chance I gave it and this background service * is still happening. I am uninstalling all of their games and EA App (along with their registry keys)
I gave good money over the past for their games, now I will never play them again, but to my mind I can say but one thing: good riddance.

EABackgroundService.exe seems to be a main DRM component (or at least a part of DRM system) for subscription based services such as EA Play.
I have also found references to EasyAntiCheat_Setup.exe in it, as well as TelemetryManager component for which I have no idea what it collects and sends, but I see that it has the ability to cache telemetry data while offline and send it when you are online again.
There's also indication that the executable has code for enumerating running processes on the system but whether it is used to find only its own processes (EADesktop.exe and the like) remains to be seen.
