EA app creates Start Menu root level folder and associated entries on startup

Periodically I fire up the EA app or the Xbox app (which triggers the EA app to start) on my Windows Desktop PC.

When the EA app starts up, it automatically creates an EA folder at the root of my Start Menu and populates it with a few entries.   At no point have I been asked for, nor have I given, permission.

I use my Start Menu with Classic Shell - it's more like the XP style. It's VERY organised.  I have a separate "Games" subfolder and the EA app lives THERE.

It's annoying to have to keep deleting these root EA entries after every time the app is used.

Creating Start Menu entres and/or Desktop icons without permission is bad etiquette.

I've seen discussions elsewhere about EA doing this from others who are similarly unimpressed.

Dear EA - would you please stop doing this.

    Hi @StefanMakz,

Do you mean this folder perhaps, or at least something like this? 👇

*I am personally using StartAllBack here.

If this is indeed the folder you're referring to, it's often standard procedure for software to generate these directories without providing users the option to opt-out during setup. That being said, all feedback is valuable and I'll ensure your comments are forwarded to the relevant teams.

    Thanks for your input!

  • hi @EA_Leeuw thanks for your reply

yeah, that's what I mean.  Tbh, it's not that common.  I wasn't talking about setup process.

I was talking about startup of an already installed application.

Most Windows applications manage to start themselves up without creating folders and entries at the root of the PC owner's Start Menu, and/or maybe even creating desktop icons for good measure.

Most applications just Start. Run. Exit.

It's an aggressive, presumptuous move to do this, and whilst it's not a deal-breaker, it is annoying, and imo, it makes something of a statement about EA.

I'm not exactly optimistic that EA will change their app to not leave a trail of detritus in the wake of its passing, but as you say, it's feedback, and one can only hope :D

@StefanMakz, are you sure that it happens at random, every time you start up the client? Not after an update of the client by any chance?

  • hi, apologies for delayed reply - I've had to wait a few days to see whether this happens at random or every time I the EA launcher app starts up.

I don't use either the Xbox app on WIndows or the EA app on Windows very much. (My PC is mostly for work, and gaming is something I do mostly on my Xbox in the living room.)

I just fired up the Windows Xbox app after not having used it for a around 2-3 days.  It triggered the EA app to start and, predictably, it recreated the EA folder and shortcuts at the root of my Start menu.

I can't test every criterion under which EA's app automatically creates these shortcuts but perhaps EA could provide an option that's selectable on initial installation of their launcher app to determine in which Start Menu folder to place shortcuts. Many Windows applications, upon installation, ask if and where to place start menu shortcuts.

If the app being so determined to recreate its start menu shortcuts when it starts up does so in the previously user selected folder (i.e. in my case, C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games ) then this wouldn't be an issue.
