EA App is an awful replacement for Origin

I originally opted in to the EA App when it was first announced, I quickly replaced it with Origin as it wasn't particularly easy to use, was buggy and frankly a downgrade. I assumed by the time EA decided they would pull the plug on Origin the app would be ready, joke is on me I guess (and everyone else with EA Games).

The app is still a mess. Half the time it won't start, when it does it'll tell me I have no internet connection, and then when I do click the 'restart' button it 'forgets' my login credentials and I have to log in again, from scratch.

Playing games is hit and miss. I tried to run a game (Plants vs Zombies) I've owned on the platform for years. I now get taken to a screen telling me I don't have a licence for the game and I need to purchase one. Not a chance am I paying for games multiple times because EA can't get it's launcher working properly.

What's worse, this mess has now affected games I own on Steam. Thankfully not all of them, but I suspect it's coming.

Sort this mess out EA, or at the very least give people the option to go back to Origin. It was basic, bare bones and unimpressive in many ways, but it worked as a launcher and actually kept track of the games I own licences for. Ubisoft, Rockstar, 2k etc have all managed to get the basics right, but the EA App is something I dread having to launch because I know every time I'm in for a world of troubleshooting before I can even start playing my game. Very poor, very frustrating.

  • So, here I am, evening two with the EA App. I tend to binge games over a period of days (sometimes weeks) until I get bored and move to another one. This time, it's Dead Space 3. Why 3? Curious I guess, never played past the prologue before. (And given I came across a progress blocking bug last night before calling it a night and going to bed I dont think this run will last much longer, but I digress.)

Opened the EA App, need to login. Why? I ticked the 'remember me' box. Dead Space 3 won't launch. Not from Steam, not from the EA App. Steam button turns blue, EA App minimises to system tray, mystery EA App window appears and disappears, EA app emerges from system tray, Steam button goes back to green 'Play'. Nothing else, no error message, nothing helpful.

    20 minutes of troubleshooting -

    Verify integrity of game files

Disabled Steam overlay for game (just in case it wasn't compatible with EA App)

Then realised EA App had an overlay, went to disable that, but guess what, you can't per game, it's either on or off. Well, it's off now, along with other crap like allowing background services to run and I won't be switching it back on. Well, until another game randomly decides it wont load and I have to do all of this again.

Rubbish, and yet another game that I'll be posting a Steam 'thumbs down', not because of the game itself (so far I'm not quite getting the hate DS3 seems to get compared to the other two) but because of the poorly thought out baggage bundled with it.
