Ubuntu 26.4 steam apps hate EA DRM

The EA game launcher fails to load on my new Ubuntu 26.04 linux running steam.  All of my other steam games run just fine under Steam's Proton emulator, but the EA launcher games choke.

Why do we need TWO (2) DRM checker systems.  Steam already verifies that I bought the game?

The EXTRA COMPLEXITY of adding the EA launcher just causes more things to break.

Please remove this bloatware now!

This is likely a basic compatibility issue. On PC, you need Windows 10/11 and on Mac, macOS Catalina or newer.

Who can download the EA app?

The EA app for Windows is available to all players on a (minimum) 64-bit PC system, running Windows 10, and 11. The EA app for Mac is available to players on macOS Catalina or newer.

    Thank you.

More than TWICE as many computers are using operating systems other than Windows!  You are being narrow minded to limit your compatibility to only Windows users.  The number of people switching to Linux is increasing exponentially!  People are tired of being spied on by their OS vendor.  They want options, and EA games is STUCK IN THE PAST limiting their users when there is NO NEED to do so.  This issue is NOT SOLVED!!!!  Saying the magic work COMPATIBILITY does not eliminate the issue or fix my problem.  Steam already checks DRM and respects Operating System choice.  EA Launcher DOES NOT and is completely unneeded with Steam games.

BarryBMead I get what you’re saying, but to be clear -- this isn’t being treated as a “bug” on our side. It’s a limitation of running in an unsupported environment.

Steam working via Proton doesn’t guarantee that every launcher or service layer will behave the same way. The EA app relies on systems beyond just purchase verification, so when it fails under Proton, that’s a compatibility gap -- not something that’s considered broken in a supported setup.

That doesn’t make your experience any less frustrating, but it’s why this isn’t something that can be fixed by simply removing the EA app or treating it as a standard DRM conflict.

Unlike EA, Steam makes both Windows and Linux native launcher programs.  They are ACTIVELY working to INCREASE compatibility with the Linux community.  The "Steam Deck" device is a Linux native device and runs thousands of games.  If you choose to limit your worldview to Windows Only you are shooting yourself in the foot.  It is time to open up your thinking to the future of computing and that includes Linux!
