This has happened to me as well, and I have only noticed it within the last frame of 3 hours or so since I returned. When I was online earlier, 8 or so hours earlier, things were functioning normally. I tried resetting the app as it says to do so in the error message, and to no avail. I also tried doing an EA app repair, and that was a fruitless endeavor. This has to clearly be on EA's end. Unlike you though, I can't see any of my other friends activity, all that I can do, is change from invisible to away to online, not that that changes anything.
