Also having a similiar issue. Went to play today for the first time in a few weeks and couldn't log in to the EA even though the password was correct. Eventually, was able to log in to EA and then Sims requires a download and I keep getting a download error.

I saw on another thread that you should open Task Manager with the EA App running and then click end task. After doing that - the update downloaded. I'm not sure if the Task Manager trick worked or if the EA servers are back up and running properly. But figured I'd share.
