Re: Low FPS in EA Desktop App

@EA_Jason Jason, surely you would know that this needs to be send to the Dev team making the application, not ask us to reboot to see if it changes anything. The app needs work. I almost guarantee the Dev team sees the same behaviour on some test machines in the Dev environment. Just get them to fix it. Oh, and get it to stop breaking when you minimise or close it lol. Get it out of Beta, basically.

Well the thing is that we have received only four reports in two months @oodlz.

That is not an indication that this is a major issue on our side, but it could indicate that something is happening on your PC and that's what I am trying to find out.

@EA_JasonIt's 4 results in 2 months of a very very specific problem that isn't very noticeable to the end user unless you run an FPS counter built into a monitor like I'm using (ASUS ROG PG279). You can also see it with cursor lag. I'm trying to save everyone time and if you just forward a message to the EA Desktop Dev team about this. I'll submit a report now through the App itself. If you aren't going to pass on this bug to them then there isn't anything else you can do.

This isn't a computer or end user issue, it's a software issue that can probably be resolved quickly in the next update. Get Jason or Becca to see this haha. 🙂

  • Hi Jason, I just downloaded the EA Desktop yesterday. This is something specific to it. I have an RTX 2080ti and a 9700k. I've not had this issue with Origin or any other games / software. The EA Desktop experience feels very laggy because it seems like it must be running at 30hz or something. I have a 100hz monitor, and moving the cursor around on apps is buttery smooth. But when the EA Desktop app is open AND IN FOCUS the mouse is all choppy with noticeable skips.

  • Hi Jason, thanks for your reply.

I just checked, and apart from EA Desktop itself, and the Desktop Window Manager, there is no increased CPU or GPU usage.

What I have noticed now however, is that it's just the low framerate of the EA Desktop app affecting the freesync framerate. Once I unfocus the app, everything is smooth again.

Shortly before submitting this post here, I noticed something else:

This issue only persists for a few seconds, after the text under "Startseite" ("Bestelle Madden...") is cycling. After a few seconds and until the text cycles again, the framerate is ~120fps. After the text has cycled, the FPS will drop again. This will repeat everytime this text cycles.

Maybe this is caused by the script cycling the "newsbanner" on the home screen of EA Desktop?

  • Add my report to it as well. EA Desktop indeed lowers the framerate to 30fps when i focus it, and i turn back to my default 100fps when i unfocus it. i not only have visual experience to back this up, but also a G-sync framerate counter in my Asus ROG pg348q.

In your defence, this is not the only program that does this. the other program i have it with as well is TrackIR v5. It's not happening when i unfocus the program so i can at least normally game and do other things, but it does degrade the overal experience of the new desktop app.

Maybe it has something to do with setups using variable framerates like G-Sync and FreeSync?

@jackyallstar on further testing it seemed to have only happened when i installed the program and was in the sign in window the first time. after repeated re-launches and signing in manually again i do not encounter this problem anymore.

Tough quirk to reproduce and therefore track down it seems

@jackyallstar further testing indicates it consistently occurs when downloading which makes the framerate jump randomly in the range from 30 to 60fps. no hardware is maxed out according to my performance monitors.

maybe the patcher (delta patcher?) is tied into the program main loop of the desktop application making the desktop app have unstable framerates? i'm just guessing here.

@jackyallstar after minimising to systemtray and reopening it seems the unstable framerate is gone again.

you guys definitely have a interesting inconsistency in the back-end going on :P

    @jackyallstar last report, then i'm done spamming:P

when the unstable framerate occurs while downloading and having the desktop app active, if i stop moving my mouse the framerate drops down to 11, but when i move my mouse it ramps up and determined by the amount of mouse activity i can get the fps around 60fps.

god this bug is awesome:P makes me want to dig into the code and discover it! 🙂
  • Guys, i have same problem. Acer predator helios 300 ph315-52 (gtx 1660ti) and i can't get more 50FPS

  • 100 percent EA's fault. Mine does this, too. 144-hertz monitor, 2070 Super, 10700K, 32 Giggs of RAM, Windows 10. Opening the application does something weird and makes it run at 60 hertz a lot of the time.

  • Im having the same issue, EA Play APP is the only software that lowers my fps to 30fps, i have G-sync enabled. EA fix this, this issue makes the app feel old.

Good lord you people at EA are sorry and lazy as this is STILL an issue nearly a year and half later. And the so called fix suggested by a user here does not work for me as there is still lag and stutter. Fix this garbage.

I got the Origin will be discontinued message so I went ahead and installed the EA App. Good lord is it messy. The low frames and stuttering on my entire desktop just for having the app open is frustrating.

  • Adding the app to the Nvidia Control Panel doesn't make a difference for me, sadly. Whoever made this app should be embarrassed. EA app is THE worst game launcher I have ever seen. Even the name is stupid and just screams "we are creatively bankrupt". Origin wasn't perfect by any means, but killing it for this pile of useless buggy garbage? Pure insanity.

Like an idiot, I replaced Origin with the EA App a couple of months ago, and I've had lag/stuttering issues in Battlefield 2042 ever since. I have a Ryzen 9 5900x and a Radeon rx 6900 xt, with 32GB of DDR4 RAM, so I'm pretty sure it's not me.
