Re: "Something went wrong" Game Pass PC on trying to install EA Play game

I have figured out the root cause of my problem. My xbox account is linked to an old EA account which I had EA support delete many years ago. Unfortunately, it still remains linked to my xbox account. I contacted EA support again to unlink it, to which they said they can't. They told me to somehow undelete my account and do it myself, but the password recovery didn't work, as it wouldn't send it to my email of course. EA support also said that they couldn't un-delete my old EA account either.

So basically support said that there is no way I'll ever be able to use EA Play with my account, but that they certainly hope it all works out for me.
For everyone else, this may be the same for you. Your xbox profile may be linked to another EA account. Recover it if you can, and then unlink it.

Classic EA. I've come to the conclusion that I must be in the same boat: Microsoft / Xbox account is linked to an old EA account that was made off of an email address that I haven't had access to for probably a decade now. No way of recovering the old email address, so if EA isn't willing to unlink old accounts then guess I'm SOL as well.

Edit: I decided to reach out to EA Support anyway, and since my old account wasn't deleted we were able to recover it after they had me answer some verification questions (which thankfully I was able to remember). They assigned my old account to a new, accessible email, I was able to login to the old account and unlink it from Xbox, I followed the directions for linking an Xbox account to EA account here: https://help.ea.com/en-us/help/account/link-your-console-accounts/  with my "primary" up to date EA account and now Gamepass is able to install EA Play games.

  • Thanks mate, this helped me identify the problem.
Funny thing? I was able to unlink it from the previous account, finally get to the login window but once I put the credentials of the new one...same "Something went wrong error".
Support said it's a "Server issue" and to wait some days....ofc

  • I did try an EA adviser again to see if they could recover my old account. It went about how you would expect. These advisers have no capability of providing the support I need. In fact I was a bit peeved that they started lying to me just to get me to go away. They kept telling me to keep trying to do the forgot password option to recover my account, and that it would work eventually. (It's not going to work, the FAQ even says it wont). They said that the service was probably down and that they would report it (It wasn't down). It really shouldn't be this hard to unlink an account, and it's a real kick the in face to not be able to get something that I am now paying for, and never will be able to get. I specifically deleted the account all those years ago to avoid an event like this. My real question now is why is EA having no interest in fixing this. My account was never really deleted if it is still causing me problems, as it's still in a database somewhere but nobody wants to put forth the effort to fix it.

  • Same problem here. I deleted my account years ago and now, instead of landing on a login page, on PC Game Pass and every EA game on Xbox, there's a window that try to log me with the account I deleted with no chance to change and choose another account. That's madness! Nobody told me that my Xbox account (and also PSN) will be linked to that EA account FOREVER. This is a real hole! Somebody needs to fix that as soon as possible! I paid for the Game Pass and I want to play at all the games I paid for. And anyway is a trivial mistake to fix for EA, so why are we still in this situation?!

I love you for this. I have been going crazy trying to figure out what the hell I was doing wrong... especially since I did manage to play EA game with Game Pass on PC before, but now there was no way to make it work. I managed to login in my old email, recover my old account and unlink my gamertag. After that, clicking on Install, opened EA App with the login and asked me if I wanted to link Xbox to it. Splendid! Thank you so much.
