Re: Xbox Series X wireless controller not working with FIFA 22.

Hi @levvvisb,

I believe that we have a similar thread about this on the forums and I'll merge it as soon as I can find it.

To go back to the problem that you are having, could you first let me know which controller you are using?

Some controllers are not natively supported by Windows and require third party program to run for example. For the official Xbox controller you can try a few things such as connecting the controller via cable or only using the official Bluetooth dongle for the controller (if you have one).

  • @EA_JasonMy son is having the same issue while playing the game. As soon as he exits the controller is fine. he has a genuine Series X controller. We have uninstalled the game, restarted etc. Can't think of what else to do

@compacthawk i have the same controller. i've just connected my controller through a usb and now it's working perfectly fine. hope you get it sorted!

  • Having the exact same issue as described above.

I just purchased a brand new xbox series x wireless controller to play fifa 22 today. The controller works fine when plugged in with the USB C cable for Windows 10. But when using the wireless/bluetooth connection. The joysticks spam all over the place in the menu making it impossible to do anything. This is definitely an error with the game, and not my controller. As in other games it works fine, and in the xbox accessories app, using the test function. All aspects of the controller work fine and as intended when showing the inputs. Needs to be a patch/hotfix asap.

Are you both using the official Bluetooth dongle or the built-in Bluetooth on the motherboard or a third party Bluetooth dongle?

Can't speak for everyone but I am also experiencing these problems with the x-box one controller. In my case, I am not using the official Bluetooth. while playing other games I don't have a problem with the controller, it is only on FIFA 22 that I am having this played 21 with PS4 controller and did not had this issue at all.

  • @EA_Jason Nope on this occasion isn't still not working via cable, and we have tried a new controller too, the game still isn't working.

    Hi EA_Jason,

Are you able to raise a proper bug report with the Devs for this? It affects the controller when using Bluetooth only. Every other game works fine (e.g. anything through Steam, any Xbox game pass game, Epic (Fortnite) etc.) it is just the Origin or EA Desktop overlay that is having these problems. One of the main workarounds is to disable the EA overlay and force the use of the Steam overlay - the controller then works fine. I've attached below the hoops I had to jump through to get my son's FIFA 21 working, the problem is exactly the same in FIFA 22 and the workaround using the Steam overlay still works. This should be all the proof you need to get this raised with the Devs please? It is a demonstrable, repeatable problem. Thanks.

My son had the same problem running the Series X controller with PC version of FIFA 21. He is using EA Desktop. I've put together some instructions below to fix this. The key steps are check controller works with Steam big picture, disable game overlay in EA Desktop. Finally to add EA Desktop to Steam (not FIFA!)

    Setup steps

    EA Desktop
Disable EA desktop game overlay (Application, Application settings, In-game overlay)

    Steam
Power on controller. Ensure the controller is working in Steam, test big picture mode.
Add EA Desktop as an external Steam game (not FIFA!)

    FIFA 21 - Load
    • Switch on controller
    • Open Steam, run big picture mode
    • Open Library using controller
    • Open Games
    • Launch EA Desktop
    • Using mouse start FIFA 21

To confirm Steam overlay is working look for "Steam community" splash at bottom right, followed by "Config loaded"

    FIFA 21 - Exit
    • Exit FIFA 21, ignore errors. If it says disconnected just wait a few seconds
    • In EA desktop top left click the three horizontal lines icon
    • Select Exit
    • In Steam big picture use back arrow couple of times until you get back to Home screen
    • Press power button icon and select Exit Big Picture

    Hi @itssph,

I have brought this up in the past, but in that instance I have seen one or two reports that the EA app crashes. In the examples that I have seen here it doesn't crash, but from what I see in this thread you are having some issues with FIFA recognizing controller inputs correctly and only for FIFA.

I'll be sure to bring it up again that it only gives issues when using the controller via Bluetooth (third party dongle and not the official Xbox dongle) and that it works when using a wired connection.

@EA_Jason Thanks, yes issue only apparent on Bluetooth, but as I say every other controller overlay (Steam, Epic etc.) handles the same setup without issue. Thankfully the Steam overlay kludge works for now....
  • Hi,

I recently got a new controller, and I am facing a similar issue, the controller seems to work fine when connected with USB and is recognised as XBOX one controller. After the firmware update of my controller, the Fifa is not working properly and doesn't seem to identify it as XBOX one controller. and it  identifies as Bluetooth LE xinput device on Game controller in windows

Since FIFA only allows genuine controllers for its games for a long time, can you provide a patch that configures our updated controllers so that it is identified as XBOX one controller in Bluetooth mode as well?

Guys it fixed!! After updating windows to Windows 11 22H2 it fixed the issues with the controller!

  • Hi,

I have the same problem with the EA App, I have an EA Play subscription.

The controller doesn't work correctly when I use it in wireless mode.

I have a new Microsoft XBox Controller purchased on november 2022.

So yesterday I tried this steps:
    - uninstall EA app

    - download older Origin App from the web (you can find it easily searching on Google)

    - Install older Origin App and sync the games (the app do it)

    ... and IT WORKS!!!!

Now the controller works like a charm (IN WIRELESS MODE!!)

I hope my answer is helpful.
