Trouble opening EA app, therefore, no game

Right now I'm having trouble opening the EA app. It tries to open for several minutes before ending with an error and telling me "background services crashed", which it says it will do manually if I click the button to "run update", and it proceeds to try, but tells me that it's all up-to-date, then closes. I get no farther than that. I have tried that several times, restarted my computer and tried again and it's still a no-go. Please help; I'd really like to be able to play again!

Honestly, I really wish that Sims 4 was not an online game. I would have paid for CDs to be able to play anytime vs. having to deal with the headache of never getting to play because of internet outages, glitchy bug fixes and stuff like this. As much as I enjoy the Sims, this has been really disappointing.
