Community AdminDivinylsFan as you already noticed and puzzleaddict highlighted, there's an annoying bug we are dealing with.
Due to caching issues, the avatars sometimes seemingly get reset, and currently the only fix is a server cache clear and restart.
We are waiting for engineering to fix the underlying issue so that this doesn't happen again.
Of note for your original point is that we are actually working on replacing the avatars available now with a mechanism for users to pick their own custom avatars in the future. It's still a bit out, but it's coming.

Its happened again. And it has reverted to a young boy silhouette. Why is it a boy? Why isn't it a girl? I've indicated on my profile that I'm female. I'm offended.

It's an annoying, intermittent bug and we are looking to get it resolved.
For what it's worth, it's still showing the plumbob for your avatar for me.
As for the image, It's a default, short haired avatar provided by our platform host that is not intended to be a representation of ones gender.I'm not the only person on this forum who has expressed it appears to be a boy. It is misogynistic.
