While I agree that it'd be nice to have page numbers, I don't believe that will change as it's how the site is designed. However, if you just want to see new posts in a thread, you can change the display order to show newest first by using the drop-down menu on the right (beneath the opening post).
You can also change it in your account settings if that's more convenient - it's in "Preferences".
