It won't let me link my Steam account to my EA account

I recently tried to relink my Steam account to my EA account and it says I can't since my Steam account is linked to my 2nd account and you can only have your Steam linked to only one EA account. Problem: Said EA account is gone since I had it merged over 6 months ago. I currently have only one singular EA account and when I use the login info for my old account, it logs me right into my only account. I've tried to use the EA Help website to figure this out, but it is useless since it's just AI that doesn't understand what I'm saying. I'm gonna go ask Steam if they have an idea of what's going since it seems to be a common problem EA is just too lazy to fix. In the meantime, anyone got any ideas on why I can't link my Steam and EA account?
