Can you try putting your device in a Clean Boot?
I have this same problem and reported it on the EA Desktop board as a bug. It looks like it is an overlay issue as I've read it should pop up with a list of your friends, but turning the EA overlay on or off doesn't change anything.
Currently this game is unplayable on Xbox Game Pass for PC as you need to be able to invite a friend to play the game.
Both of us own the game but as the button to invite a friend does nothing, we cannot play it at all.
Hope EA works with the game makers to rectify this.
it is a shame if they are care about us. i have a case at the EA Help, case no is 96377452 and my case closed with the note that says 'not solvable'. i have sent them photos, videos of the situation but nothing happened. i have even said to them that they can reach my computer remotely, i dont care, i just want to solve this problem but they didnt connect my computer remotely also. so now, still i cant play my game online with my friend. i am dissapointed that ea team is insufficient.
I just had this same issue and I tried a bunch of different things before getting it to work. I was able to send invites, but my friend never received them.
For some reason the key for me was to update Origin. Since you can't have Origin and the EA app open at the same time, I had to close EA, update Origin, close Origin and then relaunch EA.
After doing this I tried sending a friend invite and I received a notification that my invite went through and my friend was then able to join.
