No, we tried everything we could think of. My girls finally just had to restart the game...after taking a break for a few months. Anxiety levels were pretty high when they got to the elevator again, but fortunately it worked on the second play-through. They're on the last level now and have not had any other game-breaking glitches.

As for the above suggestion of trying to land at the same time, that was one of the first things my girls tried when the glitch first showed up. It never made a difference for us.
