PC Hard Crash - Black Screen

Product: F1 23
Platform:Steam-PC
Please specify your platform model. PC
Summarize your bug Hard Crash, Black Screen, No Signal to Monitor/TV Always happens when I finish in 5 Laps in the Feature 2nd Race of Single Player Career Mode. It has not been able to save and progress beyond as it always crashes after I finish the race.
What is your 16 digit Report Code? KBHJ-APKB-PPBP-VESE (Paused the game before checkered flag)
Can you please provide the name of your current internet service provider? Rogers Internet (Canada)
Which area is the bug/glitch in? Single Player
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Created a new profile in Single Player Career Mode F2 23 (I think its 23) - I changed the helmet colours and name and chose and finished a full qualifying run for Bahrain. Took pole position. Start the Feature Race 5 laps in the pole position and finish in first.
What happens when the bug occurs? After the checkered flag, the cinematic scene will play for a bit and then the screen goes black and no more signal to the monitor and computer needs to be restarted by holding the power button. This crashing is also intermittent in other parts of the game, video settings, Time Trial, Breaking Point, etc. Consistently in Career Mode -Single Player - (Driver) but all over the place on a random basis.
What do you expect to see? I would expect it not to crash and the game saves and I can proceed to the next race.

How to Fix F1 23 Crashing at Startup,Not Launching, Freezing, Stuttering and Black Screen

Specifications:
ASUS PRIME B660-PLUS D4 - Updated Bios to 3010

ASUS TUF 3070 GPU - Nvidia 546.33 Drivers

32GB Memory

Windows 10

Here's what I've tried:

  • sfc /scannow
  • Check integrity of game files via Steam
  • Uninstall/Reinstall Game
  • Delete Hardware config xml file
  • Change GPU settings (Decrease Quality, Change Anti-Aliasing, etc.)  - This sometimes causes it to black screen but not always
  • Uninstall GPU Drivers with DDU (Guru3d) and reinstall latest Nvidia 546.33 Drivers
  • Plug in an Xbox 360 Controller
  • Look in the Event Viewer for clues (dwn.exe & Kernalbase.dll seem to go off when it crashes and I tried a bunch of things to solve that, no luck)
  • Clean Boot, Safe Boot, Minimal Boot
  • Run Windows Update
  • Increased page file

Things I have not tried yet:
Reinstalling Windows 10

Upgrading to Windows 11

Pretty much at my wits end as I consider myself fairly competent in trying to find a solution especially when others have experienced something similar and its been documented.

  • Solution (what worked for me):

    Graphic Settings

    Video Mode

    Vsync: On

I vaguely remember turning this off two weeks ago now as I figure as higher fps couldn't hurt even though my TV probably can't handle it.

Boy was I wrong and I forgot I had changed this setting.

With that setting changed, I finished Bahrain in F2 and played in Time trials and messed with other settings in Graphics. Turned everything to ultra high. 16x anti-aliasing, etc.

Thanks for all who read this thread.

Run CrystalDiskMark 8.0c on that SPCC NVMe

if it crashes, RMA the drive and make sure they replace from Netherlands.

  • All clear from CrystalMarkDisk.

The crashing only happens in F1 23.

Assetto Corsa, Minecraft, Forza 4 and 5, all run flawlessly.

I've also run FurMark GPU and CPU stress tests which didn't cause any errors or crashes.

    Super strange circumstance.

Can you install Afterburner and get some frame rates or run the benchmark and post a screen of the result?

  • Installed MSI Afterburner and ran benchmark mode.

Let me know if I should include any other details.

I think I turned on the most relevant ones for the on screen display.

I can certainly lower the settings.

99% GPU usage doesn't seem good...

It fluctuates between 98 and 99.

  • I think it has enough airflow. The GPU temp holds steady at 76 degrees.

Also if anyone knows how to change my user id to something readadable let me know. I went to Profile, EA ID and all the normal places and didn't find a place to edit it.

It looks ridiculous. I'm a real person.

99% GPU usage is normal. It means your GPU is being used!

76C is also within an acceptable range for the RTX3070.

Don't lower the settings, this will increase the framerate and perhaps cause loss of sync.

Unless it's the photograph the onscreen fidelity doesn't look good, can you post a screengrab using F12 in Steam and upload that?

Yeah with the setting off if you have a particularly performant GPU the framerate may go high enough for the display to lose sync.

Or, conversely many higher res displays can't use anything other than proscribed refresh rates (e.g. 4K@30Hz)

Basically the game is ready to ditch the low end systems, the game is configured with VSYNC off for all the ones with old systems (may or may not meet minimum spec) or weak / iGPUs. Before anyone moans about that, it has been the case the titles that have come out on PS5/XBSeries/PC only are more reliable and have more new features enabled by default.

Does my brain when players start "troubleshooting" and lower the settings! 😇

    Thanks for posting what worked!
