Re: Duplicate wheel buttons

@Dansmotorsport @CM_RedDevil I think I can add some information to this issue.

Microsoft only allows the same Buttons to be used, as you'll find on the Xbox One/X/S standard controller pad. These are A, B, X, Y, Up, Down, Left, Right, LB, LT, RB, RT, Option, LStickDown, and RStickDown. That's all. For racing wheels, Microsoft allows three paddles to be detected additionally.

From the racing wheel's manufacturer side, the wheel must be programmed to map those Xbox buttons to the corresponding physical buttons.
Companies like Thrustmaster are incompetent in doing so, as, e.g., Left/Right Stick Down is not even considered. Therefore, my Thrustmaster TX base consists of duplicate A, B, X, and Y buttons, rendering half of the physical buttons useless in F1 23. There is no way of having DRS and Overtaking on the wheel while not sacrificing menu or camera options. This was already the case with F1 22, and I have to admit (sadly) that the Xbox Series consoles are trash for racing simulators.

Not even Flight Simulator makes fun of being played on an Xbox because you cannot have a satisfying cockpit setup. Microsoft's support team reached out to a question at the Microsoft forums that they are looking into this situation, but no timeline for a solution has been given. This was back in 2019.

@MrtnMjwski Your wrong this is completely false as on ‘grid legends’ (codemasters game) all buttons can be used separately and not one button is duplicated. On Xbox aswell so it’s not a Microsoft thing at all

@Dansmotorsport That’s interesting mate, I always believed the previous post that it’s not possible to use the spare buttons - I have the TM SF1000 and barely touch half the buttons 😢. I’d be thrilled if they can change the game to allow assigning all those lovely buttons!

@timinator2014 Yea and that was my thinking too until I tried grid legends and all the buttons were different and could be mapped to anything you want it to be (like you can on pc)
  • @MrtnMjwski That's not entirely true my man - when TrueForce is enabled on the Logitech G923 you can map the extra wheel buttons (plus, minus, enter, turny wheel left, turny wheel right) as separate inputs and they don't represent Xbox controller buttons. Can confirm personally for F1 23 for Xbox One.

However when TrueForce not enabled - these buttons do absolutely nothing.

@HashbrownRolo Ahh ok that’s a positive thing then meaning that they can definitely do it so hopefully it gets fixed for fanatec equipment. Cheers

Yes it is correct and it is not an EA/Codemasters issue. Just look up the button mapping schematics on Thrustmaster’s website for, e.g., the TX compatible wheels. That’s why most of the XBox exclusive hardware only has as many buttons as the the standard controller. You cannot even have unique functions on the Elite controllers for the back pedals. And you are limited to the aforementioned button catalogue on Flight Simulator, which is a Microsoft product/game as much as it can get.

@HashbrownRolo You're right, and I said that Microsoft allows steering wheels to have some additional functionalities like an accelerator, brakes, clutch, and (as you stated correctly) wheel turn and shifting.

But regarding the maximum number of digital buttons, you are limited to the standard button catalog and cannot use an arbitrary button ID like on the PC. Just compare the XBox-compatible Logitech G923 with the PS4/5 version, and you will notice that it has fewer buttons AND resembles the standard controller.

Edit: Out of interest, what do plus and minus appear as in the F1 23 controller mapping menu?

@MrtnMjwski No you are still wrong just go and try grid legends. You can assign all buttons to something different. Game is made by the same people on the same platform so it’s definitely a game issue

Okay, I take this info and will reevaluate it by checking out Grid Legends in a bit. Thanks, mate!
