Seems they could kill two birds with one stone if they let us create say 4 icon drivers. We could create ourselves and/or other drivers of different nationalities and genders and then let us choose if they can be signed by other teams or tethered to just My team. Let us set the stats for them so they fit in and off we go. Then those of us who want the owner and driver to be separate can keep them that way with different avatars and names, and those that want to have it be the same character just uses the same avatar and name.
