For all struggling with understeer/oversteer postpatch midrace

Most of this will likely come through tyre temperatures.

Even with a default setup the worst car in the game can take corners flat which some on here claim to to be able to, its all just a matter of the approach.

First dont apply pre patch tyre pressures, they lead to fast overheating, on tracks like Suzuka the softs will even get to the limit on minimum pressure after a while when you are not subtle in you steering!

Second even when you think you have low enough tyre pressure look at the degrees! Anything above 100°C is costing you 1% grip per degree C.. In other words when you have 102° tyre temps you are running a one step harder compound in terms of grip and so on, thats really causing a lot! When its only the front tyres you will understeer even worse, when its the rear that overheats you will easily spin due to oversteer!

Default setups do work great when you lower the differential and do some practice runs to see when what tyres of the softest set you want to use are nearing 100°, when its only after like 5 consistent laps it might be fine, if you are at 100° after your 2nd lap you need to lower the tyre pressure.

When you are getting high temps even with lowest pressure, try steering more subtle, if you understeer like that try a bit softer suspension on the front but not much! Its not easy but the less you need to steer for making a turn the lower the tyre temps will be!

  • One thing to add. Take note of the track temperature. The higher and the lower pressures you usually need to apply (and viceversa). Track temperature was usually neglected in F1 games in the past because it made little difference but if you come from other sim titles (as ACC) you know how important it is and I'm glad that Codemasters finally addressed the issue.

@Amioram Actually had to test it and you are right, temperatures do make quite a difference by affecting the surface temperatures of the tyres which then leads to mid corner understeer at higher temperatures.. Didnt expect that, but the temperature range isnt high enough currently ranging from ~38° midday no clouds to ~24° night overcast which is not covering things like Imola with 15° or european heatwave at France with 56°.

But its a start and definitely matters, so even more favors subtle steering inputs!

Very nice to hear that about track temperature! 😎

About your first post @Meza994 did you check tyres temps get higher after continuous lapping? I read something you need 5+ laps to understand, while till F1 2021 was enough to check a couple of laps I would say and just check your driving style was not overheating let's say "in a single lap". I have not tested yet.

I also hope my words are understandable 🥳

    Ciao,

@NuvolarixImo (from my testing) it can still rise a bit depending on the track after lap 3 but usually 3 laps suffice, its just like F2 last year, doesnt reach its max after 1 lap

@Meza994 I also noticed the tire temp seem to affect softer tires a lot more than harder ones.

I just finished a 100% distance race at Abu Dhabi yesterday in MyTeam. And the constant 100-102 degrees was absolutely killing my soft tires. However, at the same temperature, my medium was able hold it's performance just fine (for 28 laps) and even faster than my soft (though my less fuel load while I'm on medium might play a huge factor here).

@Apophis-STR In theory they should work the same but might be that you were driving slightly differently with the mediums due to the lower grip they gave and thus not reaching higher temps on the surface - or the track temps were a bit lower causing less surface overheating.

There are many factors but all the temps are gonna be much more interesting now and hopefully even more important next year!

@Meza994Agree, really like how now we (somewhat) need to face the same challenge and struggle real drivers does, it's no longer just a simple sprint to the finish line.

@Apophis-STR Yup but sadly AI seems unaffected so far but thats something they can change in the future, it takes the right direction!
  • So just like the fact the last two games now do not need brake balance above 50%

The newest patch means you do not under any circumstances need tyre pressures just set them at the lowest level

The setup of the game has become a joke its basically on every track, 50% brake balance, lowest tyre pressures, full right/left on the camber page
