Jockey

I genuinely don’t understand how every opponent is able to keep up with my dribbling and skill moves just by jockeying. Regardless of gameplay, slow where I can’t move on offence or fast when my players are extremely responsive on offence, my defenders just refuse to jockey, as soon as I change directions every molecule of speed disappears. I hold L2+R2, I don’t let the left stick hit all the way to the sides, I simply don’t understand why my players don’t jockey properly. I hit Div 1 and 10 wins in champs but cannot progress until I figure this out. Any ideas?
